Valerie Horner

Val is a Registered Nurse whose career has included general duty nursing. Her main career involved working for the Manitoba Justice Dept-Adult Corrections, where she worked as a nurse, counselor and trainer, and was involved in suicide prevention work and suicide prevention policy development. She worked as Assistant Training Coordinator for the Justice Staff Training & Development Dept, as well as the Provincial Coordinator of ASIST Training. She continues to work as a Senior Coaching Trainer with Living Works Education, involved in delivering suicide prevention training programs as well as coaching and mentoring ASIST Trainers in Manitoba and internationally. In 2003, Val received the Quality Network Champion Award for promoting the values of leadership, teamwork, respect, performance excellence and for her dedicated work in suicide prevention. Iin 2004, she received the Exemplary Service Medal, an award presented to provincial & federal Correctional Services employees who have provided 20 years of meritorious and loyal service to law enforcement in Canada. In 2007, Val was awarded the Professional Nursing Lifetime Achievement Award from the College of Registered Nurses of Manitoba. Since her retirement from the provincial government, Val continues to work towards trying to build suicide-safer communities.
